Who We Are
Welder Underground is a Brooklyn-based 501(c)(3) preparing the next generation of welders and metal fabricators for careers in the trades.
Our four-month, earn-while-you-learn apprenticeship combines intensive shop training, real fabrication experience, industry-recognized safety credentials, and workplace preparation.
We carefully select people who are ready to learn, work hard, and build lasting careers. Apprentices complete the program as Welder Underground-trained, job-ready welders and metal fabricators prepared to contribute in an entry-level position.
What Welder Underground Graduates Bring to the Jobsite
Safety training and credentials
Graduates complete the Full Bundle:
- OSHA 30
- OSHA 10
- 4-Hour Scaffold
- 1-Hour Fire Watch
Hands-on welding and fabrication experience
Apprentices build practical experience across MIG, TIG, and stick welding. Their training includes:
- Fit-up and assembly
- Tacking and welding
- Measuring and layout
- Material preparation
- Grinding and finishing
- Material handling
- Tool care and shop organization
- Following drawings and work instructions
- Maintaining a safe and productive work area
Skills assessment and certification support
We evaluate each apprentice across MIG, TIG, and stick welding to assess their current proficiency and readiness for shop or field work.
This allows us to understand each candidate's strengths and introduce employers to people whose abilities align with the position.
When a job requires a specific welding certification, Welder Underground will support and fund qualified candidates through the appropriate certification process.

Technical ability is one part of being ready to work. Throughout the program, apprentices are trained and evaluated on the workplace behaviors that make someone a valuable member of a crew.

Arrives 15 minutes early
Parked, changed, equipped, and at the station when the shift begins.
Keeps tools organized
Returns every tool clean, dry, and ready for the next person.
Handles cords and leads correctly
Wraps and routes them safely, away from walkways, water, sharp edges, and moving equipment.
Finds the broom
Cleans the work area, stacks material, and prepares the space for the next task.

Measures accurately
Reads a tape to the sixteenth, communicates dimensions clearly, and confirms measurements before cutting.
Asks useful questions
Listens to the full instruction, clarifies what matters, writes it down, and confirms understanding.
Reports progress and owns mistakes
Lets the supervisor know when a task is complete and raises errors immediately so they can be addressed.
Arrives dressed and equipped for the work
Boots, safety glasses, gloves, hood, sleeves, and required PPE are on before entering the work area.
Keeps the phone away
Stays focused on the work, the crew, and everything moving through the shop or jobsite.
Takes direction and contributes to the crew
Approaches each assignment with focus, follows the lead of experienced workers, and looks for ways to be useful.

Welder Underground ties its training directly to industry. Every employer relationship sharpens how we prepare apprentices for real careers in the trades.
Questions
Is there a cost?
No. Welder Underground does not charge employers for candidate introductions or successful placements.
Are we committing to hire?
No. Meeting an apprentice or participating in a working trial does not create an obligation to hire.
How does the working trial work?
We coordinate a short, paid trial based on your needs and the candidate's skills. The schedule, assigned work, supervision, safety requirements, and expectations are established in advance. Welder Underground covers the apprentice's wages during the trial.
How do you assess welding ability?
We evaluate apprentices across MIG, TIG, and stick welding to understand their proficiency, strengths, and readiness for shop or field work. We use those evaluations to make thoughtful introductions based on the requirements of each position.
Are the candidates certified welders?
Some candidates may already hold a welding certification, while others are working toward one. When a position requires a specific certification, Welder Underground can support and fund qualified candidates through the appropriate certification process.
Can graduates work on a Local Law 196 site?
Our graduates complete the Full Bundle: OSHA 30, OSHA 10, 4-Hour Scaffold, and 1-Hour Fire Watch. We confirm each candidate's current training documentation and cards before making an introduction for site-based work.
What if we primarily need experienced welders?
We still want to learn about your organization and workforce needs. We can keep you informed about future graduates, certification progress, employer events, and opportunities to work together.
